NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- In the week from 24 to 30 March 2024, 480 migrants were intercepted and brought back to Libya, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) office in Libya reports in the latest update published on its social media channels. The majority of migrants intercepted last week were brought back to Tripoli (247 in March 25, 177 in March 28).
- The residence of Libyan outgoing Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah was targeted with rocket-propelled grenades on Sunday, March 31, in an attack that left no casualties, a Libyan minister told Reuters. The minister, who spoke in condition of anonymity, confirmed in a message that the attack only caused some damage. The minister has not disclosed any further details.

The ambassador of the European Union (EU) Nicola Orlando said Saturday, April 06, he met with UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily and “had an insightful exchange of views on the worrying stalemate of the political process, which increasingly jeopardizes stability and the unity of Libya.” The ambassador also said he had confirmed EU’s support to Bathily’s mediation and reiterated EU’s encouragement for bold efforts to bring the key stakeholders to the negotiating table to take Libya to national elections.
- UN envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily said Wednesday, April 3rd, he met with the new Chargé d’affaires of Egypt, Ambassador Tamer Elhefny. “I shared with him my assessment of the latest political developments, emphasizing the importance of positive engagement from all Libyan and regional actors in the five-party dialogue,” Bathily stated on X.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- A group of students from the Libyan National Robotics Team will travel to the United States to compete in the World Robotics Championship to be held in Houston, Texas. Chargé d’Affaires at the U.S. Embassy in Libya, Jeremy Berndt said: “It was a real pleasure to meet this impressive group of students from the Libyan National Robotics Team who will be traveling to Houston, Texas to compete in the World Robotics Championship with support from the Libyan Academy for Telecom and Informatics (LPTIC). “We are rooting for them. I am certain these gifted young Libyans will play a vital role shaping Libya’s future,” Berndt commented.
- French Ambassador to Libya Mostafa Mihraje invited Deputy Chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mussa Al-Koni, to International Humanitarian Conference for Sudan and its Neighbours. According to a statement by the Libyan council, Al-Koni affirmed to Mihraje that the war in Sudan affects the security of Libya, adding that the conference is an opportunity to coordinate efforts to address the humanitarian crisis.
