584 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya from 7 to 13 April, said the International Organization for Migration (IOM). So far in 2024, according to IOM, 4,942 migrants have been intercepted and returned to Libya.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- The Delegation of the European Union has issued a statement together with the diplomatic missions of the EU Member States in Libya, on the occasion of the resignation of UN envoy to Libya, Abdoulaye Bathily. They expressed gratitude to the Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General “for the tireless efforts he made since his appointment in September 2022 to facilitate a Libyan-led, Libyan-owned political process.”
- In his final briefing to the UN Security Council, outgoing United Nations envoy to Libya Abdoulaye Bathily announced his resignation, citing two key factors behind the deteriorating situation in the country. “The past months have seen a worrying deterioration in Libya, primarily due to the lack of political will and good faith from the main Libyan actors, as well as the emerging regional and international dynamics at play,” Bathily told reporters at a press conference following his UN address.
- The Court of First Instance in Ajdabiya has ordered the imposition of judicial custodianship over the Libyan Investment Authority (LIA), its funds, revenues, and balances held at the Central Bank of Libya, the Libyan Foreign Bank, and all other foreign banks. The court has appointed the certified accountant Khaled Abujwad and the legal expert Salem Al-Kadiki as judicial custodians over the LIA’s funds, assets, and revenues, granting them the authority to seek assistance in carrying out their duties.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- In a high-level meeting held in the city of Murzuq, the Libyan government appointed by the House of Representatives has outlined a comprehensive plan to support the reconstruction and reconciliation efforts in the region. Prime Minister Osama Hamad, accompanied by the Director General of the Libyan Development and Reconstruction Fund Belqasim Haftar, and the Head of the Stability and Reconstruction Committee, convened with local officials, elders, and dignitaries to discuss the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges faced by Murzuq in recent years.
- The General Command of the Libyan National Army (LNA) extended its deep condolences to the Sultanate of Oman for the victims of the floods that struck the state of Al Mudhaibi. LNA statement said: “Today, the General Command of the Libyan National Army received with great sadness the news of the floods that struck the state of Al-Mudhaibi and a number of regions of the sisterly Sultanate of Oman, resulting in casualties, injuries and the loss of a number of citizens.”
