NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- Violent and sudden armed clashes erupted between armed groups affiliated with the Government of National Unity headed by Abdul Hamid Dbeibah in the city of Gharyan, located southwest of Tripoli, which led to panic within the city. The clashes, in which all types of weapons were used, erupted after an attack launched by the “Stability Support Forces” led by Ghniwa al-Kikli, which took control of the Counter-Terrorism Headquarters in Gharyan, which is affiliated with the “Mukhtar al-Jahwi” militia, which declared a state of emergency and mobilized its forces to respond to this attack.
- Ghana’s Embassy in Tripoli in collaboration with the International Organisation for Migration has repatriated a total of 165 Ghanaians from Libya to Ghana. According to the Ministry of Information, they are scheduled to arrive at the Kotoka International Airport at 1500 hours GMT. This was contained in a statement issued by the Information Ministry.

International Organization for Migration (IOM) announced on Monday that 224 migrants were intercepted and returned to Libya from 28 January to 3 February. IOM added that 8 migrants went missing and 73 died on the Central Mediterranean Route between 1 January and 3 February, 2024.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- The UN has removed the travel ban on Safia Farkash Al-Barassi, the widow of late Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. In a press release issued last Wednesday, the UN said that the Security Council Committee, established pursuant to resolution 1970 (2011) concerning Libya, decided that Al-Barassi is no longer subject to the travel ban measure imposed since the 2011 Libyan civil war that toppled Gaddafi.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- The Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) arrived in Qatar upon an invitation by the Qatari Shura Council. This is Saleh’s second official visit to Doha. HoR Member Jebril Oheida said in press statements that Saleh was accompanied by the head of control apparatuses’ committee Adnan Al-Shaab, energy committee Issa Areiby, and the HoR member Idriss Al-Maghraby.

France’s Ambassador to Libya, Mostafa Mihraje, has invited the Speaker of Libya’s House of Representatives, Aguila Saleh, to visit Paris during a meeting. According to a statement by the Libyan parliament, the two also discussed “developments in the political situation in Libya and ways to end the current crisis”.
