NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 271 illegal migrants, including 25 women and 23 children, were rescued off the coast of Libya between September 24 and October 2. Additionally, four bodies were recovered during the rescue operations. This year alone, 11,736 illegal migrants have been rescued and returned to Libya, with 925 fatalities and 1,168 still missing along the Central Mediterranean route near the Libyan coast.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- Libya’s parliament passed a law to establish an agency responsible for rebuilding flood-hit areas in the country. Eastern Libya was ravaged by deadly floods caused by Mediterranean storm Daniel on Sept. 10, killing more than 4,000 people and leaving behind a massive trail of destruction.
- The United Nations’ top official in divided Libya called for a unified mechanism to lead the reconstruction of a coastal city that was wrecked by devastating floods last month. U.N. Special Envoy for Libya Abdoulaye Bathily said in a statement that such a mechanism is required amid “unilateral and competing initiatives” by Libyan actors and institutions on the reconstruction of the Mediterranean city of Derna and other flood-impacted areas.
- Libya’s Attorney General Al-Siddiq Al-Sour said there is no need for an international investigation into last month’s flood disaster in the eastern city of Derna. Eastern Libya was ravaged by deadly floods caused by Mediterranean storm Daniel on Sept. 10, killing more than 4,000 people and leaving behind a massive trail of destruction. Derna was hardest hit by the floods, causing the city’s dams to burst, washing away homes and people.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- Libya’s Attorney-General ordered the detention of the country’s ambassador to Brussels over alleged corruption, shortly after the government in Tripoli dismissed her. Amel Jerary was questioned about “administrative and financial abuses” allegedly used to “obtain illicit material advantages by illegally seizing public funds and causing harm to public interest”, the office of Attorney-General al-Seddik al-Sour said.
