Away from official institutional meetings and one week after her meeting in Tripoli with her italian counterpart, Luigi Di Maio, Libyan Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush’s secret visit in Italy once again, on a car rented by her own. Why not to inform foreign national authorities?…and neither the Libyan Ambassador in Rome apparently? Who was taking care of her personal security during this travel? It’s clear that her visit was oddly kept under track. Such a strange behaviour for an official government representative.
Broken protocol and security concerns
According to state protocol, when a Very Important Person (V.I.P.) pays a visit to a foreign State, strict rules must be followed in order to avoid diplomatic crises. Therefore, the aforementioned protocol is vital to assure essential security measures to protect the VIP and his/her delegation. Usually police units are attached to the security detail that follows the VIP, facilitating his/her movements in the hosting county and securing the sites that will be visited.
Libyan Foreign Minister Najla al-Mangoush’s secret visit in Italy: Why not to inform foreign national authorities?
All said, in this case, not local security forces were involved and Italian authorities, not notified of the visit, did not even know of Mangoush trip. Although, fortunately, any accident was recorded, the risk was high and protocol totally ignored. It is understandable that a VIP like the the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nadia Mangoush, deserves to live her private life and pursue happiness, for the record she is not married, but does she need to behave outside the “normal” framework?
Mysterious visit with an almost invisible footprint
Reliable sources among Libyan Embassy in Rome have strongly denied that such a visit took place under the framework of recent bilateral meetings taking place between Italy and Libya. According to one of them “this visit is not in libyan and neither in italian government agenda and Ms El Mangoush’s travel to Italy could be only related to personal reasons”. Hence, what’s the reason for such a secrecy?
Ms El Mangoush last visit in Italy was on 23rd of april; at that time she met with several Italian government representatives and gave a speech to the Italian Chamber of Deputies’ foreign affairs committee, saying that Libya’s transitional government intends to “talk to everyone the same way and put a new agenda on the table.” Is it possible that during her visit in Rome she met someone and she is secretly back in Italy to continue her summer affair? A source from her political inner circle seems to confirm such an assumption; during her visit in Italy, Ms El Mangoush had several private meetings, apart from official ones. During one of these meetings, she had a dinner with a wealthy entrepreneur according to our source, and since than contacts between two have increased till becoming a stable affair.

Additionally Ms El Mangoush is not new to unofficial and unclear visits during her office; last Monday she met General Khairi Al-Tamimi in Benghazi, one of the military leaders of the military of General Khalifa Haftar, raising questions among the observers and media platforms on her loyalty to GNU Prime Minister. Officialy she was taking advantage to be in Benghazi to visit her family and relatives.
