NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- Chargé d’Affaires at U.S. Embassy in Libya Jeremy Berndt and Defense Attaché has met in Tripoli with military officials from the Western Region to discuss education programs for officers, according to Berndt. “We discussed opportunities to expand professional military education programs for officers from throughout Libya, cooperate on capability development, and strengthen information-sharing to continue to make tangible progress on the U.S.-Libya security partnership, Berndt said. “The United States is committed to increasing security cooperation with professional military officers in all parts of Libya to support military unification and help Libyans safeguard their sovereignty,” he affirmed.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- The city of Zliten has been grappling with a power outage lasting over 72 hours, prompting residents to threaten escalatory actions. Ismail Al-Jousmi, the Director of the Media Office of Zliten Municipality, attributed the responsibility for the outages in eastern Zliten to the General Electricity Company of Libya (GECOL) and, by extension, the government led by Prime Minister Abdel Hamid Dbeibeh. Al-Jousmi explained in a press statement that the company had been informed of the issue long ago and a designated location for installing transformers had been allocated, but the transformers have yet to arrive.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- In the context of the holding of the Libya Healthcare Expo in Tripoli (24 to 27 June), under the auspices of the Emergency Medical and Support Centre (EMSC), the 12th campaign of Spanish doctors in several fields visited Libya to perform consultations and surgeries. As in previous campaigns, the Spanish Embassy informed Libya Herald, the medical team will stay in Libya for one week. On this occasion, the team included plastic and reconstructive surgery, neurosurgeon and traumatology specialists. The Spanish team perform the operations in hospitals of the EMSC network throughout the country.
- The European Union Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, announced via a post on his personal account on “X” that he had a productive meeting with Major General Saddam Khalifa, Chief of Staff of the Ground Forces in the Libyan National Army. Both parties expressed their desire to strengthen their partnership, building on the collaborative efforts between the EU and Libya in response to the Derna floods last September. Orlando highlighted the review of the outcomes of the EU technical mission on migration and border management held yesterday in Benghazi. He emphasized the importance of exploring cooperation opportunities in several sectors, including combating human trafficking, rescuing migrants in the Libyan desert and along its coasts, and enhancing the capabilities of law enforcement agencies.
