NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- The International Organization for Migration (IOM) reported that 503 illegal migrants, including 79 women and 60 children, were rescued off the coast of Libya between 8 and 14 of Octobe. Additionally, one dead body was recovered during the rescue operations.
- Libyan authorities have recovered 69 more bodies of local residents of the coastal city of Derna, who have drowned in the city where the collapse of two dams unleashed a massive flash flood on September 10. The bodies were recovered between 6th and 10th of October, according to Ahmed Al-Mesmari, the spokesman of the Libyan National Army (LNA). This brings the death toll of floods in Derna to 4278, Al-Mesmari said.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- The UN Security Council unanimously voted in favor of renewing sanctions on Libya and extending the mandate of the Panel of Experts of the UN Sanctions Commission for 15 months, according to the UK Mission in the UN.
- The Government of National Unity holds firm to its position “for the holding of free and transparent elections and for the restoration of legitimacy to the legislative and executive authorities, in accordance with fair laws,” said Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.
- The Turkish disaster management agency AFAD said it sent 850 tons of humanitarian aid materials to flood-hit Libya. The agency in a statement said it continues its efforts to heal the wounds of Libyans hit by the Sept. 11 disaster.
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
- The US, UK, Italy, Germany and France have voiced their support the the UN’s call for Libya’s leaders to “work together toward a binding political settlement that paves the way for national elections and a unified government.”
- The United Nations Security Council is expected to vote today on a draft resolution renewing the mandate of the Panel of Experts (PoE) of the 1970 Libya Sanctions Committee and the authorization of measures contained in resolution 2146 of 19 March 2014 related to the illicit export of petroleum from Libya. The draft resolution also contains several new provisions concerning the arms embargo and assets freeze measures imposed by resolution 1970 of 26 February 2011 and modified by subsequent resolutions.
- Libya will host in December the fifth Arab Ministerial Forum for Housing and Sustainable Urban Development as well as the 40th meeting of the Council of Arab Ministers of Housing and Construction, Libya’s Ministry of Housing and Construction announced.
