NATIONAL SECURITY ISSUES
- According to a report by AON, a British-American professional services and consulting firm that provides data, analytics, and strategic consulting services, the losses incurred by Libya due to the floods that accompanied the storm “Daniel” in the east are around 4.3 billion dollars. The report also states that the confirmed losses worldwide due to natural disasters were the highest ever in the third quarter of 2023. The heavy floods that Libya witnessed last September were the second deadliest natural disaster of 2023, causing financial losses worth 4.3 billion dollars. The storm destroyed thousands of buildings in Derna alone, resulting in more than four thousand deaths and over eight thousand missing people.
- Seven more bodies of the victims of the devastating floods that hit Derna have been recovered, said the Libyan Emergency Medicine and Support Center, which affiliated with the authorities of eastern Libya. The Emergency Medicine and Support Center also said that its search and rescue team have recovered the remains of 12 victims. The massive flash flood that has left over 4000 dead and thousands missing came as eastern Libya was lashed by the hurricane-strength Storm Daniel on September 10.
NATIONAL POLITICS AND SOCIAL ISSUES
- Libya’s Prime Minister, appointed by the House of Representatives, Osama Hamad visited the flood-ravaged city of Derna to inspect rebuilding efforts, accompanied by a delegation from the Libyan National Army (LNA). The trip came at the direction of LNA commander Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar. Interior Deputy Minister Faraj Aqeim, the commander of the LNA’s 166th Infantry Brigade, and engineer Belgasim Khalifa also joined the tour.
- Stressing the need for the Israeli occupation to stop its aggression against Gaza immediately, the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR) called on the ambassadors of the countries supporting the Zionist entity to leave Libya immediately. HoR called in a statement on the government to stop exporting oil and gas to these countries if the massacres committed by the occupation do not stop.
- The Libyan Government headed by Osama Hammad announced plans to distribute financial compensation to victims of last month’s devastating floods in the coastal Al-Sahel municipality by the end of this week. According to a government statement on Monday the census and compensation committee has agreed to begin disbursing relief funds to residents impacted by the floods no later than this weekend.
